Window Installation Inspection

Per ASTM E2112, windows must be installed plumb, level, and square. Maximum deviation is 1/8" from plumb or level across the window dimension. Shims must be placed at all fastening points per manufacturer instructions.

1. Check each window for level (sill) and plumb (jambs)

2. Verify window opens and closes smoothly without binding

3. Check that sash locks engage properly

4. Measure diagonals — should be equal (indicates square)

5. Verify proper shimming at all support points

- Windows out of level or plumb causing operational issues

- Excessive shimming gaps left unfilled

- Binding or sticking from racked installation

- Hardware not aligned due to frame distortion

Per ASTM E2112, windows must have proper flashing with head flashing, jamb flashing, and sill pan. Weather-resistant barrier (WRB) must be integrated with window flashing in a shingle-lap pattern. Sealant per manufacturer specifications.

1. Verify head flashing is installed above window and integrated with WRB

2. Check that sill pan is properly sloped to exterior

3. Inspect sealant at exterior trim — continuous with no gaps

4. Look for proper integration of WRB with window flanges

5. Water test if possible — spray at window perimeter and check for leaks

- Missing head flashing (most common window leak cause)

- Reverse-lapped WRB at window head

- Sealant gaps at corners and joints

- No sill pan allowing water intrusion at bottom

Per IECC, windows must meet U-factor and SHGC requirements for the climate zone. Low-fill foam or backer rod and sealant required between window frame and rough opening per IECC C402.4.1. No visible daylight around window perimeter.

1. Verify window NFRC label matches specified U-factor and SHGC ratings

2. Check for insulation between window frame and rough opening

3. Use infrared thermometer to check for cold spots around frame

4. Verify no drafts by holding a tissue near window edges

5. Check glazing — should be dual-pane minimum (triple in cold climates)

- Wrong window U-factor for climate zone

- Missing insulation between frame and rough opening

- Air infiltration at jamb-to-frame connections

- Single-pane glass in areas requiring dual-pane
